Purgatory of the Living; All Dressed Up With No Place To Go

Laura Frances Zitnik Brown and Robert Claggett Brown Jr., my grandmother and grandfather, passed away within hours of each other during this time of applying to multiple M.F.A. graduate programs. With this particular piece, I took white yarn that was my grandmother’s and used it to bind myself to a large, dead tree. During this particular time, I felt that I was in a type of ‘purgatory of the living’. These two human beings, whom I had loved deeply, were gone within hours of each other and I was left having to walk this earth and cope. For me, it felt like I was living in an earthly purgatory.
