The One I Could Accept (2018) | 32″ x 170″ x 4″ | Cotton fabric, thread, bleach

In May of 2017, a 17-year-old transgender teen, Ally Lee Steinfeld, was brutally murdered in Missouri. This piece is not about her lifestyle, but rather about confronting the harshness of my response to her story. Initially the only one I could accept her be was the purest of white, and because she was not ‘pure’, I did not want to even acknowledge her suffering. That is when I began to make this piece and deal with the harshness of my thoughts so that I could actually see the tragedy of her death.
